Luton Airport says it’s unlikely any vehicles parked in its Terminal Car Park 2 can be salvaged after last week’s fire.
The car park is still too dangerous to enter, so the vehicle owners have not even been able to retrieve their personal possessions.
In a message posted on Twitter/X, Luton Airport said registration details of 1,405 cars have been passed to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, which has passed the majority of these onto individual insurance companies.
The vehicle owners are being advised to contact their own insurance companies to process claims.
The message said: “Regrettably, it is unlikely that any vehicles will be salvageable, but this is still in the process of being assessed.
“We are working with the Association of British Insurers, on behalf of the many insurance companies, about whether it is possible to retrieve any personal possessions, when it is safe to do so, and how this may work.”
In the meantime, passengers arriving at the airport with vehicles in Car Park 2 are advised to report to the information desk (opposite Starbucks) where staff are on hand ‘to assist with onward travel arrangements’.
The DART shuttle service between the airport and Parkway railway station remains suspended. A replacement bus service is operating instead, but passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
No new car park spaces are available to book until 30 October.
