Almost 75% of 18-24 year olds are planning to travel overseas in the next 12 months, more than any other age group, according to ABTA.

While city breaks are their top choice for 2024, in line with national trends, young travellers are almost three times more likely than other age groups to take an adventure holiday, it said.

They are also twice as likely to be camping, heading to a major sports event, taking a rail holiday or going on a food-and-drink break, according to ABTA’s latest Holiday Habits survey, carried out during the last two weeks of August.

Their top choice of destination is Italy, followed by France, the US, Spain and Germany.

However, 93% of 18-24 year-olds admitted the cost of living will impact their travel plans compared with just 52% of people aged 65 plus. Some 34% of young people said they will spend less next year, compared to 21% of the overall population.

To save money, 27% of young travellers say they will travel less next year, while 24% will be choosing cheaper transport options, and a third said they’d choose cheaper accommodation.

Dubbed Gen T by ABTA due to their enthusiasm for travel, just 4% of 18-24 year olds say they won’t go away at all next year because of the cost of living, which compares to 10% of the general population who aren’t planning a holiday next year.

ABTA Director of Communications Graeme Buck said: “18-24-year-olds have been increasingly keen to get out and see the world over the last few years.

“They went on an average of 2.7 holidays abroad each in the last 12 months, up from 2.2 holidays abroad each in the 12 months prior to that.

“That doesn’t mean lots of quick breaks either. Generation T has been taking a much higher number of holidays for seven days or more than any other age group. So, while this group has a keen eye on cost, they continue to be a highly attractive market for many in the travel industry.”
