Agents who run ABTA managed branches are now able stand in elections after the association changed its rules.

ABTA said the change, ratified at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 23 May ‘aims to increase the representation of more ABTA members within ABTA’s activities, give a wider range of members a say in ABTA’s affairs, and to introduce a way of making this increase sustainable in the long term’.

The term ‘managed branch’ is used by ABTA to describe the growing number of businesses that are moving from operating independently to operating under managed service arrangements of ABTA members.

The rule change will allow agent members who operate under a managed branch agreement to stand when vacancies arise on ABTA committees or its Council of Regions.

An ABTA spokesperson stressed the resolution doesn’t allow all branch managers to stand. It just applies to people who run managed branches. For example, if a member had three shops, the individual running the whole entity would be able to stand, not each of the three individual branch or shop managers.

ABTA Head of Membership Danny Waine said: “We’re really pleased to open up the opportunities to be involved in ABTA to travel agent members who operate under managed branch agreements.

“This means that if you run one of these businesses you’ll now be able to put yourself forward for roles such as vacancies on ABTA committees or Council of Regions.

“The managed branch model has been a developing trend for many years, and we’ve seen businesses move from being a member in their own right to one under a managed branch agreement. But prior to now these members couldn’t take on official ABTA roles – meaning we were missing out on the contribution of fantastic people.

“Now that we have changed this, we have the opportunity to harness the talent within the managed branch groups – capitalising on people’s experience and expertise, to contribute to ABTA’s work.

“So, when future opportunities arise, I really encourage managed branch members to consider putting themselves forward.”
