ABTA has organised a video conference call to help members prepare for the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which is due to launch in November.

The call will take place on 24 September and will be hosted by Director of Public Affairs Luke Petherbridge, with representatives from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also taking part.

ABTA members can submit questions in advance and can register the for call via the ABTA MemberZone.

When the automated EES system launches, on 10 November 2024, travellers will need to register their fingerprint and have their photo taken the first time they cross the border.

The new system is expected to lead to delays on arrival at EU airports and ports as it will take border guards up to two minutes longer to process each passenger.

The FCDO has just updated its advice to warn British travellers ‘may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts’.

The FCDO said: “From November 2024, the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start for all non-EU nationals, including British nationals, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. The Schengen area is made up of 29 European countries, 25 of which are EU Member States. The EES is a digital border system which registers non-EU visitors travelling into the Schengen area instead of stamping their passports.

“You will need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK. You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit.”

Last week, the Government said it was going to spent £10.5 million to minimise disruption for Brits travelling to the EU when the new rules come in.
