Angie Hills, ABTA’s Head of Destinations, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year 2025 Honours List.
The award is in recognition of her services to improving health, safety and security standards for British travellers abroad.
Angie joined ABTA in 2008 as part of the merger between ABTA and the Federation of Tour Operators where she had been working since 1998. Angie heads up the destinations team, providing leadership on all aspects of travel operations including health, safety and security, destination operations and crisis response.
Angie was responsible for the development, production and launch of ABTA’s health and safety technical guide, which has been translated into eight languages. Now in its fifth edition, this unique guide is widely used by accommodation providers, hotel associations, destination authorities, and other stakeholders in over 100 countries.
As Chair of both the ABTA Health & Safety and Operational committees, she brings together members to discuss these key subjects and collaborate to tackle matters raised.
Angie has developed close working relationships with representatives at the UK Foreign Office, the Joint Overseas Protect and Prepare team at the Home Office, UKHSA and NaTHNaC (National Travel and Health Network and Centre) as well as destination governments across the globe. Using diplomacy and influencing skills, she is known for proposing practical solutions, for the benefit not only of travellers, but of staff working overseas, local workers and residents in the destinations.
With a changing climate already impacting weather patterns, Angie developed a new training course for ABTA members on natural disasters, to equip members with the knowledge and skills of how to plan for and respond to extreme weather.
Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive, ABTA – The Travel Association said:
“Angie has worked tirelessly with our members and their customers to encourage improvements in health and security, and keep people safe.
“We are all excited at ABTA to hear this news, which is very welcome recognition for Angie’s many years of commitment and expertise.”
