A Jet2 passenger who lit a cigarette while drunk on a flight and was abusive to passengers and crew has been jailed for four months.
Emma Woolley, 43, from Wakefield was sentenced this month after earlier pleading guilty to smoking on an aircraft, entering an aircraft while drunk and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards aircraft crew.
Jet2 said its crew had ‘no choice but to call for police assistance to offload Ms Woolley’, who was flying from Antalya to Leeds Bradford Airport in January, because she had been ‘smoking in the toilet and illicitly consuming alcohol which had been purchased in duty free’.
Sentencing her at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Ray Singh said: “I can’t avoid an immediate custodial sentence. These type of offences have to be met with a deterrent to ensure others do not behave in the way that you did.”
Jet2 Managing Director Phil Ward said the company took a ‘zero tolerance approach to disruptive passenger behaviour’.
He said: “This summer we will fly millions of hard-working customers and families away to enjoy their well-deserved holidays, but sadly there are a handful of people who behave in a disruptive fashion, often fuelled by alcohol that has been purchased in duty free and is then illicitly consumed onboard.
“Ms Woolley must now face the consequences of her behaviour and we are confident that this sentencing will send out a very clear message to others about how severe the consequences can be.”
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports Woolley had been in Turkey for dental treatment and told the crew she was in pain. The court heard she had previous convictions, including being drunk and disorderly, and drink driving.
