Greek authorities closed the Acropolis for several hours today as temperatures in Athens continued to rise.
The Culture Ministry announced the closure of the Acropolis from 12 noon to 5pm on Friday, adding similar measures were likely to be put in place tomorrow (Saturday).
Reuters reports Greece’s meteorological service reported temperatures peaking at 41 Celsius in Athens by midday, but temperatures on the Acropolis Hill are usually higher because of its altitude and lack of shade.
Earlier on Friday at least one tourist was stretchered out of the site after falling ill in the heat, local police said.
Several other tourist sites around the Sacred Rock where the Acropolis stands remained open throughout the day, the BBC reports.
