Advertising watchdog rules travel ad was misleading

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint over prices advertised on a holiday company’s website.

The complainant contacted the ASA after going on the Travel Crew website in April to search for flights from London to Buenos Aires, but finding a higher price than the one listed when it came to booking.

Trav Expert Ltd, trading as Travel Crew said its website did not update in real time, but its terms and conditions stated prices advertised were indicative, could change before booking was completed and that the starting price advertised might not be available when a customer tried to book.

It said advertised prices included taxes, but additional fees and surcharges might apply.

The ASA said it hadn’t seen any evidence from Travel Crew that the prices advertised were ‘genuine and not misleading’ and there was no information in the advert that said availability was limited, prices could change or when the advertised prices were last checked.

It said the advert also breached its code because the price didn’t include non-optional taxes, duties, fees and charges.

Trav Crew was told to ensure it holds evidence to show advertised prices are genuine and include all non-optional taxes, duties, fees and charges. And, if availability is not updated in real time, to ensure ads prominently state when prices were last checked, that availability was limited and that prices were subject to change.
