There have been lots of media reports over the weekend regarding the wildfires in Corfu and Rhodes in Greece.

The wildfire situation in Corfu is quite different to Rhodes in terms of what it means for holidaymakers currently on the island and for those due to travel.

The number of people affected is significantly smaller than Rhodes.

There is currently a wildfire on the northeast of the island of Corfu which had initially affected some of the resorts in this region of the island, as the emergency services were managing their response to the fire and it was necessary to close the access roads.

We understand that as a precaution, evacuations had initially occurred in the following areas:

- The hillside villages of Loutes, Porta Perithia, Santa Megoula and Sinies.
- Viglatouri & Nisaki, Rou, Katavolo, Kentroma, Tritsi, Kokokila, Sarakiniatika, Plagia, Kalami, Vlachatika, Kavalerena.

As we understand, those who were initially evacuated have mostly been able to return to the resorts and their accommodation.

Corfu is a very large island and the fire is having minimal impact. Hotels and resorts are open and providing holiday services.

The health and safety of customers on holiday in the region is the number one priority and ABTA members remain in close contact with the Greek authorities regarding the situation in Corfu.

If you are currently on holiday in Corfu

You should be able to continue with your holiday as planned but it is advisable to continue to monitor news reports and follow any advice or instructions issued by the local authorities, your travel company and your accommodation providers.
