Aer Lingus staff have been targeted in the same cyber attack that hit other organisations around the world, including sister IAG airline British Airways.
A flaw in a tool used by payroll provider Zellis was exploited by the Clop Group, a Russia-linked ransomware gang that claims to be behind the attack.
Zellis has since confirmed that eight of its clients, including Aer Lingus, were attacked.
Around 5,000 Aer Lingus employees and former staff at the airline were affected, according to reports.
In a statement, reported by Irish media, Aer Lingus said Zellis had informed the airline that it had ‘experienced a cybersecurity incident, which has resulted in a disclosure of some of our current and former employee data’.
The airline added: “All current employees have been impacted and a significant number of former employees have been impacted.
“The affected data consists of employee number, title, name, date of birth, address, email address, start date and end date of employment, and in the majority of cases [and] PPS/Social Security numbers.”
However, Aer Lingus said that no bank details or phone contact details relating to Aer Lingus current or former employees were compromised.
“The third-party provider has confirmed that the incident has been contained,” the carrier added.
The BBC, which was also targeted in the cyber attack, has reported that the Clop Group has issued an ultimatum to victims of the hack.
The Clop Group has posted a notice online warning those affected by the hack to email them before 14 June or stolen data would be published.
