Aer Lingus pilots have voted in support of industrial action, which could include a summer strike.
The Irish Airline Pilots’ Association (IALPA) said 89% of its Aer Lingus members took part in a second ballot over the weekend, with 99% voting in favour of taking action.
IAPLA is demanding a pay rise of almost 24% for around 800 pilots working for Aer Lingus; the airline has offered 12.25%.
Describing industrial action as ‘entirely unnecessary’, Aer Lingus said it would result in ‘significant disruption to the airline’s customers and to other employees’.
IALPA is obliged to give Aer Lingus at least seven days’ notice of any industrial action, but it says it is considering a request from the airline for 14 days’ notice.
If the pilots do strike, an Aer Lingus spokesperson told Irish media that regional services between Belfast and Great Britain would not be affected.
