Ryanair has apologied after staff at London Luton Airport wrongly denied boarding to a passenger with a valid passport.

Ground staff mistakenly thought his passport didn’t comply with post-Brexit passport rules.

Under the rules for travel to the EU, passports must be no more than 10 years old and, separately, there must be at least three months left at the intended date of departure.

In this case, the passenger’s passport was issued on 11 December 2013 and expired on 11 July 2024. Since he was due to fly to Spain on 8 December 2023, his passport was valid for travel.

However, a staff misinterpreted the rules and believed that since it would be more than 10 years old when he left Spain he couldn’t board the flight.

He returned home and flew with easyJet the following day without any problems.

Ryanair told The Independent: “We sincerely regret that this passenger was incorrectly denied travel by the handling agent at Luton airport, who wrongly believed that this passenger’s passport was not valid for travel to the EU.”
