Airlines have cancelled dozens of flights to and from the UK on what is expected to be the busiest day of the year.
British Airways has chopped 50 flights from London Heathrow, according to The Independent, and easyJet confirmed 10 flights from London Gatwick have been cancelled.
BA’s cancellations affect mainly domestic and European routes with multiple frequencies, but its 11.40 flight to Los Angeles and 12.55 service to Washington have also been grounded.
The cancellations follow a day of disruption to flights to and from the UK yesterday, when Gatwick temporarily suspended all departures shortly after 8pm, according to easyJet, and Heathrow imposed a reduction in flying, both due to ‘adverse weather’.
EasyJet is believed to have cancelled 36 flights on Thursday, while other services were delayed overnight.
An easyJet spokesperson confirmed to Travel Gossip that a further 18 flights from UK airports have been cancelled today, including 10 from Gatwick, due to the knock-on effect, with aircraft stuck in the wrong airports.
In a statement, easyJet told Travel Gossip: “Due to the impact of ATC [Air Traffic Control] restrictions across the network yesterday caused by adverse weather conditions across the UK and Europe which also resulted in the temporary suspension of operations at London Gatwick, some flights yesterday evening have been unable to operate as planned.
“We have been doing all possible to minimise the impact for our customers, providing those on cancelled flights with options to rebook or receive a refund as well as hotel accommodation and meals where required and we advise any customers who source their own that they will be reimbursed.
“Due to the knock on impact of yesterday’s weather and air traffic restrictions, we advisecustomers to check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker www.easyjet.com/en/flight-trackeror via the app.
“The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and while this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”
Aviation analyst Cirium Data has forecast that today will be the busiest for UK flight departures since 25 October 2019, with more than 3,130 flights.
BA told Travel Gossip that adverse weather conditions in the London area and across Europe had led to ‘minor adjustments’ to its short-haul schedule. It added: “We’ve contacted affected customers to apologise and offer them rebooking options or a full refund.”
