EasyJet and Jet2 have posted messages warning customers that their flights could be disrupted today due to Storm Ciaran.
British Airways is believed to have already cancelled around 30 domestic and European flights into and out of London Heathrow airport.
In a statement, it said it has made ‘schedule adjustments’. It is understood that as a result of air traffic control restrictions at Heathrow, it has consolidated passengers on to fewer flights operated by larger aircraft.
Dutch carrier KLM is also understood to have cancelled some flights to and from the UK, including from Heathrow and UK regional airports, due to reduced runway capacity at Amsterdam, which is also being hit by stormy weather.
The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert for the south-west of England until 11am and the south-east coast until 5pm, as both regions are being battered by heavy rain and strong winds.
There is a yellow weather warning across the rest of the south of England, the north-east coast of England and the east of Scotland for the whole of today.
EasyJet posted a message on its website to say that Storm Ciaran ‘has the potential to cause some delays and disruption to flights’.
It urged passengers to keep an eye on Flight Tracker before leaving for the airport and to allow more time for their journeys.
Jet2 also warned customers of possible disruption to its flying programme due to Storm Ciaran. “Please observe the departure screens for updated information and listen for any announcements as we will do our utmost to get your flight underway as soon as possible,” it said in a message on its website.
A spokesperson for rail company Southeastern told the BBC that passengers were ‘strongly advised’ not to attempt to travel on mainline routes before 9am this morning. LNER has warned that disruption on its East Coast Line will last until Saturday and urged passengers not to travel on Thursday or Friday.
Ferry operators Brittany Ferries and P&O Ferries have warned of weather-related disruption today on its cross-Channel routes. In a message on its website, P&O Ferries said: “We are currently facing delays and disruptions due to Storm Ciaran. If you are due to travel between 1 and 2 November please come prepared for a potential wait.”
Condor has cancelled sailings to Jersey and the island has closed its airport for the whole of today due to the storm.
