Auckland Airport has insisted operations ‘continue to run as normal at this stage’ despite a state of emergency being declared following flooding across New Zealand’s biggest city.
In a tweet, posted on Tuesday (9 May), the airport (pictured) said it was monitoring stormwater systems and had sandbags, sucker trucks and pumps on standby.
Travellers are being encouraged to check with their airline about any possible flight disruptions.
The BBC reports heavy rainfall has filled basements, stranded cars, toppled trees and disrupted rail services.
The torrential rains are expected to last until Wednesday (10 May) evening local time.
Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson told reporters that a state of emergency was declared as a precaution in the city and disaster response services have been mobilised.
She described the flooding as an ‘evolving emergency situation’.
