Flights to and from Catania in Sicily have been suspended following a fresh eruption by Mount Etna.
It’s the second time this month that Etna has disrupted flights at Catania.
In a statement posted on X (Twitter), the airport said it had closed due to the emission of ash. “Passengers are asked to contact the airline for information regarding their flight,” it added.
Authorities said flights will only resume when the volcano’s activity subsides.
EasyJet’s flight from London this morning was diverted to nearby Palermo and Ryanair’s flight was diverted to Trapani on Sicily’s west coast. Jet2’s flight from Catania to Manchester, due to depart at 1.10pm, has been delayed till 8.40pm this evening.
