The Alaskan cruise port Juneau has set a daily limit for passengers, which will come into effect in 2026.
The country’s capital city announced in April it would impose a cap, and the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) has now signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with cruise lines to limit passenger numbers to a maximum of 16,000 each day, and at 12,000 on Saturdays.
For 2024, Juneau has already restricted the number of ships in port each day to a maximum of five ships.
Last year 1.6 million cruise ship passengers visited Juneau and numbers are expected to remain around the same for 2024 and beyond.
Juneau Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce told Travel Gossip: “The goal is to keep us in a no growth pattern so we can build the infrastructure to make our current visitor volume feel comfortable to for the community.”
She said cruise lines ‘are still building the 2026 schedules, which will reflect the new limits’.
CLIA Vice President of Government and Community Relations Renée Limoge Reeve said: “We’ve heard the community’s concerns and will continue to partner with CBJ to improve the experience of residents and visitors alike.”
