Firefighters are continuing to douse the ground in areas around Athens to avoid further wildfires that tore through the region earlier this week.

Greece’s chief fire service spokesperson Vasilis Vathrakogiannis told the BBC that they will ‘maintain a strong presence’ in the area.

There are no longer any active wildfires, with blazes having been brought under control thanks to the extensive efforts of the emergency services and milder winds in the past 24 hours.

However, wind gusts and daytime temperatures of 30+ degrees mean there is still a risk of flare ups.

One woman died when she was unable to escape from a burning factory and thousands of local residents were evacuated from several settlements north of Athens, including part of Nea Makri on the Athens Riviera as the fires, which started on Sunday north of the city, spread across 100,000 acres.

The Greek interior ministry has allocated €4.7m (£4m) in emergency funding to affected areas.
