A new evacuation order has been issued for the seaside town of Nea Makri, close to Athens, as a wildfire continues to impact areas north of the capital.
Residents in the Erythros settlement, just a four-minute drive from the Nea Makri seafront, were told to leave their homes early today.
A British tourist in a seaside hotel in Nea Makri posted a video taken from his room showing flames and smoke from the fire in the nearby hills. He wrote the ‘everyone is telling us it’s safe here’ but he was trying to decide whether to evacuate.
Thousands of others have already been evacuated from multiple settlements in areas north of Athens as the fire, which started on Sunday about 22 miles northeast of the city, began to spread.
The Civil Protection Ministry issued a high fire risk warning for today in Attica, Viotia and Evia.
The fire has claimed one life, with the body of a woman in her 60s found inside a shop in the northern Athens suburb of Vrilissia.
A huge cloud of brown smoke that blew over Athens earlier this week had cleared this morning, but the air is still hazy and some ash has fallen on the city, said the BBC.
Firefighters are warning that there are still ‘many active localised blazes’, mainly around the towns of Marathon and Penteli.
A fire service spokesperson told the BBC that the conditions for new fires this week ‘remain dangerous’.
