Strong winds have severely disrupted air and rail traffic to the Netherlands today, with Amsterdam Schiphol cancelling hundreds of flights, including services to and from the UK.

Authorities have urged people to stay indoors after 75-mile-per-hour winds hit the Dutch coast early this morning and the National Meteorology Institute issued a code red warning.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport has cancelled more than 300 flights, with traffic expected to be limited until at least 3pm local time (1pm GMT), Reuters reports.

The airport issued a statement on its website, warning that ‘very limited’ air traffic would be possible between 9:00 and 15:00 due to strong winds, rain and poor visibility.

A Schiphol Airport spokesperson said: “This means there will be cancellations and delays, for both arriving and departing flights.”

The NL Times reports KLM announced on Tuesday evening it was cancelling 207 flights today.

British Airways’ morning departures from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City to Amsterdam were cancelled.

A BA spokesperson said: “Like other airlines, we’ve been asked to reduce our flights to Amsterdam today due to adverse weather.

“We’ve been in contact with affected customers to apologise and offer them options including rebooking or a full refund.”

EasyJet flights from Belfast, Gatwick, Glasgow, Luton and Manchester have also been affected.

Some easyJet passengers tweeted how they had learned their flights had been cancelled through the airport, rather than from the airline.

Travel Gossip has contacted easyJet for a comment.

Train operator NS halted all train traffic in the north of the Netherlands.
