British Airways has cancelled flights at least until 8.30pm this evening due to an IT outage.

Passengers report being stuck on planes on the tarmac while others say they’ve been unable to check in for flights online or on the app.

The airline had cancelled at least 5% of its flights by 5pm today, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

However, it is understood to have cancelled more flights throughout the rest of the day, up until at least 8.30pm.

European and domestic flights are affected.

The problem appears to have started before midday.

In a statement, BA said: “While the majority of our flights have continued to operate today, we have had to cancel a number of Heathrow flights due to a technical issue.

“Affected customers have been contacted and offered options, including a refund or rebooking to an alternative flight with us or another carrier.

“We are extremely sorry to our customers for the inconvenience caused,” it added.

The cancellations are believed to be on routes where BA has multiple frequencies so passengers can be transferred to alternative flights.

BA suffered a similar outage in February 2022, when its website and app became inaccessible for a number of hours.
