British Airways has axed 72 flights from Heathrow on day one of the Easter strike – more than double the number it said it expected to cancel.
The cancellations also include six transatlantic flights. Earlier this week, BA told customers no transatlantic flights would be affected.
The Independent reports one transatlantic link each to Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Seattle and Washington DC has been grounded.
One passenger tweeted to say: “Our flight to LAX due at 9:50am this morning cancelled at midnight – too late for us were already in airport hotel – no explanation but already told that the flight we are rebooked on at 1545 is delayed!”
Domestic destinations that have had services cancelled include Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle, the Independent says.
And it adds: “In Europe, multiple services to Amsterdam, Nice, Stockholm and Zurich are axed, along with departures to a wide range of other destinations including Athens, Vienna and Palma de Mallorca.”
Earlier this week, BA said about 16 round trips per day would be cancelled, on average 32 flights each day of the strike, equating to around 5% of all its flights.
It said the cancellations would affect multi-frequency short haul flights, and added long haul flights to and from Heathrow would not be affected.
BA said customers should check ba.com for the latest information on their flight before travelling to Heathrow.
