A British Airways captain wrongly activated a plane’s emergency slide just before take-off, delaying the flight from London Heathrow more than three hours.

The error is understood to have cost BA £50,000.

Flight BA886 was preparing to depart for Romania on Saturday when the pilot opened the door to pass documents to ground crew. According to The Sun, they forget to first disarm the door, which would have prevented the slide from activating.

The newspaper said the captain was taken off flying duties immediately and passengers were transferred to another plane, which took off more than three hours late.

A BA spokesperson told Travel Gossip: “We apologised to customers for the delay and arranged a replacement aircraft to ensure they were able to continue their journey.”

Emergency slides on BA aircraft were accidentally activated by crew at least three times last year.
