Passengers were evacuated from a British Airways flight in Bermuda after authorities were told a bomb was onboard.

The threat was announced as BA flight 158 was due to take off for London Heathrow.

A spokesperson for LF Wade International Airport said it had received a threat sent by email at approximately 9pm on 5 May, saying there was a bomb on the aircraft.

“This prompted an immediate evacuation of the terminal building while the British Airways Boeing 777 aircraft was repositioned to a remote airfield location where passengers safely deplaned. Flight 158 was subsequently cancelled,” they told The Royal Gazette in Bermuda.

“Following a sweep of the terminal building by the Bermuda Police Service and Skyport officials, passengers from the British Airways flight were bused back to the terminal building, where airline personnel assisted them with transportation and accommodations.”

American Airlines flight 409, which had been en route from Miami when the threat was received, was diverted to Norfolk, Virginia.

Bermuda police later said the bomb threat was a hoax.

BA said: “The safety of our customers and colleagues is always our highest priority and we followed our standard procedures to disembark the aircraft. Our teams cared for our customers as we worked to get them on their way again as quickly as possible.”
