British Airways has cancelled more long-haul flights over the next few months after being forced to ground a number of its Boeing 787 aircraft.

The airline doesn’t have sufficient spare parts for the planes’ Trent 1000 engines, due to supply chain issues at Rolls-Royce, an issue flagged by Travel Gossip last month.

The Independent has reported that ‘at least five’ 787s have been grounded, while The Times says it’s six, which is the equivalent of 15% of BA’s fleet.

As a result, BA has postponed next month’s planned launch of a London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur service until April and it is suspending its daily London Gatwick to New York JFK flight from 12 December till the end of March 2025.

The airline is also understood to have cancelled other long-haul flights, mainly on routes where it has multiple daily services.

BA said ‘most’ customers on cancelled flights will be offered a flight on the same day with BA or a partner airline, but they might need to travel from a different airport.

A spokesperson said: “We’re disappointed that we’ve had to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce – particularly in relation to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft.

“We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve for their travel plans. We’ve apologised to those affected and are able to offer the vast majority a flight the same day with British Airways or one of our partner airlines.

“We continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the company is aware of the impact its issues are having on our schedule and customers, and seek reassurance of a prompt and reliable solution.”

A Rolls-Royce spokesperson told The Indepdendent: “We continue to work with British Airways and all of our customers to minimise the impact of the limited availability of spares due to the current supply chain constraints. Unfortunately, this is an issue affecting the whole aerospace industry.”
