Former Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown has helped London Luton Airport celebrate its 85th birthday by recreating an iconic photo featuring Lorraine Chase.

Candice, who owns the Green Man pub in Eversholt, about 15 miles from the airport, swapped champagne from the original photo with a new beer, Lift Off 85, which has been specially brewed to mark Luton’s milestone.

The beer is on sale at the Big Smoke Brew Co in the airport departure lounge and 2016 Bake Off champion Candice had the honour of pouring the first pint.

Luton Airport opened as a municipal aerodrome in 1938, then served as a Royal Air Force based in the Second World War, before developing as a commercial airport during the package holiday boom in the 1960s.

Its fame was boosted by a 1970s Campari TV advert that saw Lorraine Chase asked if she ‘wafted here from Paradise’, to which she replied: “Nah, Luton Airport.”

The Lorraine Chase advert inspired four-piece girl band Cats UK’s 1979 hit single Luton Airport.

It’s not the first time a drink has been created to celebrate at Luton Airport milestone. Five years ago, to celebrate its 80th birthday, a Campari cocktail named after Lorraine was created.

As part of the 85th birthday celebrations, the airport is also offering customers the opportunity to win prizes, including a holiday worth up to £5,000.
