Officials in the Balearic Islands are planning to increase tourist taxes during the peak summer months from next year.
Balearic President Marga Prohens said the tourist tax will go up in June, July and August 2025.
The tax is likely to be reduced during the low season of December-February, in an attempt to attract more visitors outside of the peak months.
The exact rate of the peak-season increase has not been announced, although the opposition party, Més, has called for rates to be doubled. It’s also unclear whether the reduced rate during the low season will be a discount on the current level or a smaller increase than the peak-season rate.
The current tourist tax rate is €4 (£3.30) per adult per day for guests staying at a five-star and four-star-plus property; €3 (£2.50)pp per day for guests in a three- or four-star hotel and €2 (£1.70)pp per day for guests in other accommodation. The rate is halved after eight days. Under 16s are exempt.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin said the new plans mean 7.5 million visitors to the Balearics will pay higher tourist taxes next summer and calculates that, if the peak rate was to increase by 50%, this would generate €35 million.
President Prohens said in Parliament on Wednesday the increase will go to improving the region’s financial situation. She also referred to protests this summer in the Balearics over mass tourism, saying: “The discomfort of residents due to the externalities of tourism is increasingly unanimous and transversal.”
The Balearic Government also said it won’t grant new requests to turn homes into tourist rentals throughout the island. Currently, this rule only applies to Palma, Majorca.
