Bali has confirmed it will introduce a tourist tax next year.

The $10 fee (about £7.60) is much lower than the Indonesian Government had been considering.

In May, authorities said they were considering a tax of $45 to $150, or £24 to £80.

The fee will be paid electronically and will apply to tourists entering Bali from abroad and from other parts of Indonesia, according to The Jakarta Post.

Governor I Wayan Koster said he did not believe the tax would deter visitors, adding: “The payment of a fee for foreign tourists applies only one time during their visit to Bali.

“We will use it for the environment [and] culture and we will build better quality infrastructure so travelling to Bali will be more comfortable and safe,” he said.

The Indonesian island attracts millions of visitors each year, with nearly two million tourists travelling to the island between January and May 2023, latest figures show.

Travel Gossip has contacted the Bali Tourism Board for confirmation of the date the tax will come into effect.
