Barrhead Travel has created 11 additional Scottish apprenticeship places, which will be partly funded by Gold Medal.

The places will be made available for apprentices across Barrhead’s retail network in Scotland, delivered in association with AS Training and Glasgow Clyde College.

Every apprentice who completes the course will be offered a full-time position with the travel agency group.

Barrhead said funding for travel apprenticeships is at an all-time low, particularly in Scotland with travel courses set to disappear by the end of summer.

“Differences in funding levels compared with other areas of the UK has compounded the issue with training providers able to claim triple the funding per head in England compared with Scotland,” it said.

Barrhead President Jacqueline Dobson added: “Gold Medal’s support for our additional apprenticeship places is fantastic and a strong signal of their commitment to support young people into retail travel.

“They share our vision in attracting the next generation of travel professionals into the workplace via dynamic training programmes and we’re very privileged to be working with them.”

Jacqueline added: “The funding situation in the UK, but particularly in Scotland, has been abysmal over the last year and we’re strongly advocating for change. Travel is being pushed out of the picture when it comes to government support for education – despite it offering incredible opportunities for long-term career development.

“It is essential for the industry that we create a thriving talent pipeline – and it’s great that we have a passion and drive to do so.

“However, investment by industry is not sufficient and it is vital that the UK and devolved governments urgently turn their attention to future-proofing the travel industry by supporting education, college programmes, and training for our youth employment.”

Gold Medal Trade Partnerships Director Karen Fletcher said the operator was ‘thrilled to be supporting Barrhead Travel this year as they welcome 11 Scottish apprentices’.

She added: “We hope that our continuous investment into future travel professionals and our commitment to this programme will provide talented individuals with the best start to their travel careers.”
