BBC One consumer show Rip Off Britain will air a programme focusing on holiday scams and travellers’ rights when things go wrong ahead of Sunshine Saturday.

Tomorrow’s show, at 10.45am, will look at how more than 800 British holidaymakers in Tenerife were conned out of thousands of pounds by criminal gangs, plus it will give advice to viewers on their rights if a cruise line changes their itinerary or they’re caught in a natural disaster.

The programme will interview a couple who claim they were refused a refund when their cruise changed before departure, and a woman who says she was let down by her operator during last summer’s Rhodes wildfires, which forced many Brits to flee their hotels.

It will also show how Spanish police busted a Tenerife crime ring that made more than €4 million targeting elderly tourists, mainly in Adeje and Arona. A total of 33 alleged members of the gang have been arrested as part of a police investigation launched in 2022.

Travel Gossip has previously reported how members of the gang targeted tourists on shopping trips, offering them cut-price tech devices such as iPads in order to gain their credit card details, which they used on shopping splurges once they were sure their victims had flown home.

Five alleged members of the gang have been remanded in custody after appearing in court and the police investigation is ongoing.
