New research has revealed the city break destinations where Brits will get the most for their holiday spend this summer.
Lisbon has topped the annual Post Office Travel Money City Costs Barometer of 35 cities, with overall costs for hotel accommodation, food, drinks, transport and sightseeing just 2% higher than last summer.
Two nights in a three-star hotel averaged £121, 5.2% up on 2022, while the price for 11 other typical city break items the Post Office uses to calculate its list (such as meal for two, sightseeing tour and transport to and back from the airport) came in at 1.5% lower than last year, bringing the total to £225.
Every other city in the table has seen price rises of over 30%, Post Office Money research shows.
Lithuania’s capital Vilnius (£226), which had been rated top city by the Post Office in 2019 and 2020, is a close runner-up to Lisbon for 2023 – just 25p more expensive for the barometer items.
Two other past winners – Krakow (3rd place, £251) and Athens (4th, £262) – complete the top four cities.
The biggest rises in hotel rates are in Madrid, up 139% from £161 to £385, and Berlin, up 121% from £168 to £372.
When looking at meals, drinks, transport and sightseeing, 10 cities – Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dubrovnik, Florence, Madrid, Paris, Riga and Venice – registered rises of 10% or less, while four – Stockholm (-14.7%), Bruges (-4.9 per cent), Krakow (-3.2%) and Lisbon (-1.5%) saw year-on-year falls.
A separate Post Office survey shows that Lisbon is the only top 10 city in the City Costs Barometer to be named among the most popular 10 choices for holidaymakers planning city visits.
The other top 10 choices named in this research – Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, London, Rome, Edinburgh, Madrid, Dublin and Berlin – are among the most expensive cities in Europe, according to the barometer research.
However, Dublin has the lowest price tag for cultural activities, because entry to its leading museum and gallery are free, while the charge for its top heritage attraction, Kilmainham Gaol, is just £7.22.
Closer to home, Cardiff (£387, 14th) rates as best value of the four UK capitals, over 27% cheaper than Edinburgh (£535, 25th). London and Belfast both rated among the 10 most expensive cities in the survey.
Prices were either supplied by tourist offices or researched online and are based on early May exchange rates.
