Birmingham Airport is the latest hub to announce plans to scrap the 100ml liquids rule.
The airport is spending £20 million upgrading its security screening systems to ensure it can end the luggage restriction ahead of the government’s June 2024 deadline.
Passengers will be allowed to bring up to two litres of liquids in carry-on luggage once the technology had been introduced.
Stephen Barker, Development and Construction Director at Birmingham Airport, said laptops could also remain in hand luggage following the multi-million pound overhaul.
Birmingham’s security upgrade, which includes the installation of computed tomography scanners, will be completed by June 2024.
In March, Teesside Airport became the first UK airport to scrap the 100ml limit on liquids in hand luggage, followed by London City.
Stephen said: “Once built and operational in June 2024, our new pre-flight screening area will further enhance our already high standards of security as well as improve the efficiency of our operation.
“This improved efficiency will enable us to process customers quickly, especially at peak travel times.
“Customers will no longer be required to remove liquids and laptops from hand luggage.”
