Birmingham has become the first major UK airport to complete the installation of new security scanners, which means liquids and electronics can be left in hand luggage at the checkpoint.
It is one of only four airports to meet the Government’s previous deadline of 1 June to have the new scanners in place, the others being London City, Teesside and Aberdeen.
The Government has since extended the deadline for the installation of the 3D scanners till June 2025, but warned remaining airports there must be no further delay in their introduction.
The more sophisticated scanners mean that passengers don’t need to remove liquids and electronics such as laptops and tablets from their hand-luggage.
Ultimately, it will also mean that passengers will be able to take containers carrying up to two litres of liquid in their hand-luggage, but Birmingham Airport is warning that, for the time being, the 100ml restriction remains.
“Whilst we expect that passengers will be able to carry up to two litres of liquids in their hand luggage, due to an outstanding regulatory approval, which is out of the control of Birmingham Airport, only liquids up to 100ml can currently be carried,” the airport said in a statement online.
Terminal Operations Director of Birmingham Airport added: “Whilst the airport is ready with its new security technology, we are awaiting the final approval of the 2L liquid allowance.
“In the meantime, any customers travelling through the airport can take liquids, pastes and gels up to 100ml loose, and no longer in plastic bags, in their hand luggage. Additionally, electricals can stay in their bags and do not need to be removed at the security search area.”
Once the regulatory approval of the 2L allowance has been granted, we will update our customers, the airport added.
Bristol Airport is expected to be one of the next to complete the installation of the new scanners, on 14 June.
