Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon has been forced to close again after a nearby volcano began spewing lava yesterday morning.
Guests were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon’s hotels and all the facilities temporarily shut down.
In a statement online, the tourist attraction said it was ‘a safe distance’ from the current eruption site, but this is the third time it has been forced to close due to seismic activity since December.
The eruption of the Sylingarfell volcano, located about 3km north of the town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes peninsular in south-west Iceland, began at 6am local time on Thursday.
Videos from the area, which is close to an earlier eruption in mid-December, showed orange molten rock spewing from fissures in the ground.
The country’s international Keflavik Airport said flights are continuing as normal.
In an update to its travel advice for Iceland issued this morning, the Foreign Office said: “All roads to Grindavik and the surrounding area are closed and you should stay away from this area.
“Keflavik International Airport and the road to it is unaffected and operating normally. The capital city, Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland is not impacted by the eruptions.
“It is likely there will be further eruptions in this location. You should monitor local media for updates and follow the authorities’ advice on travel to the area.”
