Iceland’s Blue Lagoon spa and hotel complex will remain closed until Saturday.

The famous outdoor spa only reopened fully on 12 January – the first time all establishments at the spa in Svartsengi have been open since 9 November, when a volcanic eruption forced their closure.

However, it announced two days later it would close until at least Tuesday of this week, following the latest eruption from another nearby volcano.

In an update on its website, the Blue Lagoon said: “A volcanic eruption commenced southeast of Hagafell mountain on the morning of 14 January. Following an increase in seismic activity detected in the area on the previous night, we took the precautionary measure of evacuating all our operational units.

“According to recent reports from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, it appears that the volcanic eruption may have ceased. The current eruption site is at a safe distance from Blue Lagoon.

“Consequently, we will remain closed until Saturday, 20 January. Further updates and information will be provided here as they become available.”
