England’s tourist attractions saw more than a quarter fewer visitors in 2023 than pre-pandemic, according to the results of a recent survey.

Attractions saw an 11% rise in visitors year on year, but numbers were still 28% below 2019.

While visitor numbers crashed in 2020 to 65% below 2019, they recovered significantly in 2021 and 2022, when they grew 30% and 42% respectively.

But the growth of just 11% year on year in 2023 meant that visitor numbers were still lagging more than 77 million behind 2019, when some 274 million people visited England’s tourist attractions.

One of the reasons for the slowdown in the recovery was fewer visits by the domestic audience, which corresponds with the decline in staycations last year.
