A British man has been killed after getting caught up in the taxi driver strikes in Cape Town.
According to reports, the man was a doctor, aged 40, who was on holiday in South Africa with two relatives.
He was killed in the Ntlangano Crescent area of Cape Town last Thursday.
It is believed he had taken a wrong turn from the city’s international airport and was shot by protestors, reportedly after he refused to pay a toll when he was stopped by striking taxi drivers.
The Mirror reports Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said: “The doctor was driving with two other persons in the vehicle.
“From the airport, he apparently took a wrong turn off and headed towards Nyanga. A number of suspects approached his vehicle, shot and killed him. No arrests yet.”
The man, who has not yet been named, is among five people reportedly killed during a week of unrest related to the strike.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in South Africa and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Earlier this week, the FCDO updated its advice for British people in Cape Town, warning the strikes had the potential to turn violent.
