British tourists could face an accommodation shortage in the Balearic Islands after the region’s president vowed to ban new holiday rentals.
Francina Armengol, President of the Balearics Government, said there would be no growth in tourist accommodation on the islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, iNews reports.
Last year, the Balearic Islands government pledged to buy and close down poor-quality hotels and tourist bars in a bid to shake off the islands’ reputation for drunken excess.
On Wednesday (24 May), Ms Armengol told business newspaper Expansion: “We propose zero growth in tourist, hotel and vacation rental places, maintaining the ban on vacation rentals in multi-family homes and to fight against illegal offers (of accommodation).”
She repeated her Government’s wish to start buying ‘obsolete’ one and two-star hotels and convert them into housing for locals.
Ms Armengol, who heads a left-wing coalition regional government with Més per Mallorca and Unidas Podemos, is standing for re-election in local and regional polls on Sunday 28 May.
Més per Mallorca has called for a 60% rise in the tourist tax and more investment in research and development.
According to Majorca Daily Bulletin, last year the Balearics attracted 16, 475, 579 tourists in total, just 397 fewer than in 2019 before the pandemic and 76,000 lower than in 2018, which was an all-time high.
The Balearic government has said 16.5 million tourists is the limit.
