The Government of the Canary Islands is warning of an ‘extreme’ calima that will affect the whole of the archipelago from today.

The calima is a thick cloud or haze caused by dust blown over from the Sahara.

People are being urged to keep doors and windows closed and those with chronic or respiratory diseases are advised to stay inside.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast the calima will persist ‘for a few days’, but the weather is expected to clear by the weekend.

Until then, visitors are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous exercise and take extra care driving due to reduced visibility.
