Caribbean Tourism Organisation UK & Europe Chapter Chairman Colin Pegler is opening a luxury travel agency in Essex.
Part of Barrhead’s Brilliant Travel franchise, it will be the group’s first agency in the south-east of England.
“It will also be the first true luxury travel agency in Essex,” said Colin.
Colin, who is Managing Director of Resort Marketing International, said there were no other high-end travel agencies in the county, despite its apparent wealth.
Vaycay Luxury Travel will be situated in Resort Marketing’s head office in Whitham, which Colin said is situated less than a mile from the county’s most expensive road, Mope Lane.
He has spent ‘five figures’ kitting out the three-room ‘luxury travel lounge’, designed to appeal to the wealthy local clientele. It includes a giant video wall, an entertainments room, fridges filled with Champagne and a ‘high-end’ coffee machine.
While it will focus on selling the Caribbean and Mexico, Colin said it will also sell a wide range of other destinations. Staffed by two existing Resort Marketing employees, the agency has already started taking bookings over the phone. “The first was a £27,000 holiday to Singapore, paid for in cash,” added Colin.
“We’re taking bookings over the phone now and the shop will open in a few weeks, once the interior designers have put in the finishing touches.
“It’s a very sexy agency. We’ll be seeing customers by appointment only and, while we’ll sell anything and everything, we’ll be targeting the extremely wealthy people in the local villages.”
There is already a Hays branch in Witham and a Co-op Travel nearby, but Colin said there is no-one targeting luxury travel.
“TUI has pulled out of the surrounding towns and the Thomas Cook shops have closed or converted to Hays, so there’s definitely a gap in the market for another agency for people who don’t want to drive to Colchester and want the convenience of on-site parking,” he added.
“I probably wouldn’t have opened a travel agency if I didn’t already have the premises and the staff, but now seemed the right time.”
