Carnival has issued a statement confirming that a 35-year-old male passenger went overboard during a cruise on Carnival Magic.

It said CCTV footage had revealed the man had dropped into the water after leaning over the railing of his cabin.

The alarm was raised by his travelling companion after he went overboard at around 4am on Monday morning while the ship was about 180 miles off the coast of Florida.

The man has not been named by the cruise line, but a woman who says she is the man’s fiancé said it was his first cruise. In a gofundme post, she added: “Thankfully he had a great time and made plenty of friends…the cruise was definitely a place he enjoyed.”

She is trying to raise $20,000 for his funeral.

However, the US coast guard said search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Carnival Magic was released from the rescue efforts and is due to go ahead with its next five-night sailing to the Bahamas today.

Carnival said its care team was providing support to the guest’s companion and travelling party on board.
