Carnival Cruise Line has ordered three new ships, which look set to be the biggest in the world in terms of passenger numbers.

While at 230,000 tonnes the new vessels will be 19,000 tonnes smaller than Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, which is currently the world’s biggest cruise ship, they will each have 3,000 cabins and carry ‘almost’ 8,000 passengers, 400 more than Icon.

The liquefied natural gas-powered ships, to be built by Italian shipyard Fincantieri, will be delivered in the summers of 2029, 2031 and 2033.

They will be the first in a new class of ships for Carnival, which also ordered two more of its Excel-class of ships earlier this year, to enter service in 2027 and 2028.

It recently confirmed two ships will join its fleet in March 2025 from P&O Cruises Australia, which is being shut down.

Carnival Corporation Chief Executive Josh Weinstein said: “We are doubling down on the growth of Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – to keep up with the incredibly strong demand we continue to see for the world’s most popular cruise line.

“At this point, our newbuild pipeline is just one delivery in each of 2025, 2027, 2028, 2029, 2031 and 2033. We continue to take a disciplined approach to growth, strategically directing new capacity to the areas of highest demand at a rate of one to two new ships per year.”
