It has been a busy start to the New Year already, and, as we know, in the travel industry no two days are the same. Already we have seen some operational disruption due to the adverse weather we have been experiencing and we have been updating members with operational guidance.

It’s a good time to remind you to sign up for our Operational Bulletins to help you have the latest developments at your fingertips.

Yesterday (Wednesday 8 January) saw the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) come into effect for a wide range of visa-exempt countries, with a further roll-out for most European countries in the Spring. It comes in a year when the delayed EES scheme is likely to launch, and ETIAS will come into effect at some point later. With three new schemes due to begin in 2025 there is scope for consumer confusion and uncertainty.

We are working closely with Government officials to ensure ABTA members are aware of the latest developments and we shall be amplifying their communications campaigns. A summary of the ETA is on our website here and the latest on EES and ETIAS can be found on our dedicated member-only section of abta.com

The UK's Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate came into force on 1 January 2025, requiring 2% of the UK’s total jet fuel demand be met by SAF this year. The percentage increases to 10% in 2030 and 22% by 2040. This is an important part of aviation’s decarbonisation path for it to meet its net zero goal by 2050.

There has been some media reporting recently of the potential cost that this will – or won’t – add to the cost of flights and holidays. ABTA will continue to bring policy makers and our industry together, to find ways to reduce the sector’s environmental impact in a practical and managed manner, while ensuring that travel remains affordable.

Finally, 2025 sees ABTA reach a significant milestone. It is our 75th anniversary, giving a further opportunity to showcase the long-standing expertise of ABTA and our members. We plan to mark this later in the year but, in the meantime, a big thank you for your continued support.

After a busy start, we stand ready to help all members throughout year and continue to bang the drum for a successful and confident industry.
