Seven climate change activists staged a demonstration at Gatwick airport this morning, blocking the entrance to the departures hall in the South Terminal.
Videos posted on social media showed dozens of passengers trying to walk round or clamber over the seated Just Stop Oil protestors and orange blocks to resemble suitcases that they’d placed on the floor.
Just Stop Oil said the protest began at around 8am this morning, but Gatwick Airport said the protestors have since been arrested.
In a statement, the airport said: “London Gatwick is open and operating normally today. There are a small number of protestors at the airport who have now been arrested and are being removed from the airport.”
The airport said the matter was now in the hands of Sussex Police.
The protests followed demonstrations at European airports last week, when activists glued themselves to runways in Cologne and Frankfurt, causing flights to be grounded.
In a statement, Just Stop Oil said: “As long as political leaders fail to take swift and decisive action to protect our communities from the worst effects of climate breakdown, Just Stop Oil supporters, working with other groups internationally, will take the proportionate action necessary to generate much needed political pressure.
“This summer, areas of key importance to the fossil fuel economy will be declared sites of civil resistance around the world.”
