The High Court of Justice has issued an order to wind up tall-ship operator Tradewind Voyages.
A winding up order is an instruction from the court to close down a company and liquidate its assets. According to Companies House, the order was made on 25 January, following an application by HMRC.
The High Court’s Business and Property Courts of England and Wales ruling said: “It is ordered that Tradewind Voyages UK Ltd be wound up by this court under the provisions of the Insolvency Act 1986.”
It added the cost of the petition by HMRC should be paid out of company assets.
Tradewind Voyages, based in Suffolk, paused operations in the UK in 2022, following a shaky start in summer 2021, including the arrest of its ship Golden Horizon in a financial dispute.
The cruise line, which is a subsidiary of Croatian shipbuilding company Brodosplit, ultimately owned by parent group DIV Group, said it was working through a financial restructure after sanctions were imposed on its Russian-based financier earlier that year.
Staff employed by Tradewind Voyages in the UK have been owed thousands of pounds in unpaid wages by the company. One of those out of pocket was former Marketing Manager Maddie Taylor, who told Travel Gossip she risked losing her house because she hadn’t been paid for five months.
In October 2022 Brodosplit said Golden Horizon was up for sale. Croatian boss Tomislav Debeljak – who is registered as Tradewind’s only Director and is President of DIV Group – said staff who had not been paid should claim benefits.
In November 2022, Companies House issued a first notice for compulsory strike-off of Tradewind Voyages, giving the company three months to file annual accounts. The action was then suspended.
The Tradewind Voyages website is still live, although it has not been updated recently as a message on its homepage still says ‘2022 and 2023 voyages are now paused’.
The website states the company is a member of Protected Trust Services (PTS) and CLIA.
CLIA told Travel Gossip Tradewind Voyages was a member of the organisation in 2021 only and since then has been asked to remove the CLIA logo from its website.
PTS said Tradewind Voyages has not been a member for two years and has also asked the company to remove the PTS logo from the website.
