Carnival Cruise Line has increased gratuities for the second time in less than a year.
On 1 April, the automatic gratuity rate for interior, ocean view and balcony cabins increased from $14.50 (£11.75) to $16 (£13) per guest, per day.
For suite guests, the rate became $18 (£14.59) per person, per day, up from $16.50 (£13.37).
This hike, seen by Travel Gossip on the line’s website, represents a rise of around 10% per day.
A family-of-four sailing on a seven-night cruise now pays $448 (£363). Previously, gratuities for a family would have been for $406 (£329) or $504 (£408.43) for suite guests, Cruise Hive reports.
The last time Carnival increased gratuities was in May last year – the first time the charge had gone up since 2018.
In May 2022, the amounts rose from $13.99 (£11.34) per person, per day, to $14.50 (£11.71) and for suites from $15.99 (£12.91) per person, per day, to $16.50 (£13.32).
By comparison, this year Princess Cruises upped daily gratuities to $16 (£12.92) per person staying in interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.
And, from 1 January, 2023, Norwegian Cruise Line raised gratuities for passengers in the club balcony suite and below to $20 (£16.15) per person, per day.
