River cruise lines are monitoring water levels in central Europe following flooding caused by Storm Boris.

The storm has caused water levels in sections of the Danube River to be higher than normal, with waters still rising in areas including Budapest.

Riviera Travel said the floods had impacted a ‘small number of scheduled itineraries’ and the team is making itinerary and excursion amendments. APT Travelmarvel said it expects all future trips to proceed as scheduled, but it is closely monitoring the situation and providing updates ‘as needed’.

Scenic warned itineraries and schedules may need to be modified ‘frequently and on short notice’.

It added: “Where possible we will reschedule our fleet of Scenic Space-Ships and Emerald Cruises Star-Ships to allow us to enact ship swaps. However, we are restricted with the current rising water levels, specifically around the upper Danube River areas of Vienna and Budapest.”

Uniworld said it is ‘actively monitoring the situation and communicating any programme adjustments’ to guests and travel agents.

“Guests can be assured that the operations team is working diligently to provide them with alternatives that meet Uniworld’s strict standards for quality and service, delivering the five-star experience that they know and expect,” a spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Avalon said: “Due to this record rainfall in a short period of time, there are some current and upcoming Avalon cruises in the area that are affected with itinerary changes and cancellations. We are in the process of communicating changes, plans, options and refunds with guests – and travel advisors – directly.”

An AmaWaterways spokesperson said: “Higher than average water conditions are impacting access to certain docking locations along the upper Danube River however our experienced operations team has been adjusting itineraries, using alternative docking facilities and arranging convenient ship swaps to ensure guests are still able to enjoy the excursions planned. We have not cancelled, nor are we planning to cancel, any river cruises.”
