A Norwegian Cruise Line ship has been quarantined off the coast of Mauritius after some passengers came down with a stomach illness on board.
The ship was coming to the end of a 12-day itinerary from Cape Town to Port Louis on Mauritius that started on 13 February.
About 2,000 passengers had been due to disembark on Sunday 25 February, and more had expected to board.
The Mauritius Ports Authority said it had stopped the ship from docking because of a health risk and took samples from about 15 passengers who were in isolation on board. Test results were expected to be known within 48 hours of samples being taken.
“The decision not to allow the cruise ship access to the quay was taken in order to avoid any health risks,” it said.
“The health and safety of passengers as well as that of the country as a whole are of the utmost to the authorities.”
Passengers are now expected to disembark on Tuesday 27 February.
A spokesperson for NCL said on Sunday: “During Norwegian Dawn’s 13 February 2024 South Africa voyage, a small number of guests experienced mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness.
“Upon the ship’s return to Port Louis, Mauritius, the vessel’s management team met with local authorities to confirm precautions and actions were being taken to ensure the wellbeing of all on board.
“Due to additional testing being required by local authorities before being allowed entry, the government of Mauritius has delayed disembarkation for the current cruise and embarkation for the next cruise by two days to 27 February 2024.
“We have elevated our sanitation procedures aboard the ship as part of our routine measures to ensure a safe environment for all on board and will continue to take any necessary measures to protect our guests, crew and destinations we visit.”
NCL is providing hotel accommodation for guests on Mauritius who were due to board at the weekend and is assisting passengers on the ship with travel arrangements for when they are allowed to disembark.
