Cruise lines have routed ships away from New Caledonia following days of bloody riots that have left at least six people dead.

The Foreign Office advised against travel to the French Pacific territory late last week after the closure of its international airport.

A state of emergency has been declared and France, Australia and New Zealand are carrying out evacuation flights.

In an update to its travel advice this morning, the Foreign Office (FCDO) said: “We are in direct contact with British Nationals about options to join these.

“If you are a British National in New Caledonia, make sure you register your presence so we can contact you.”

If you are still in New Caledonia, FCDO strongly encourages you to register your presence. This allows FCDO to share important updates.”

P&O Cruises re-routed Pacific Adventure’s 10-day ‘Discover Vanuatu cruise from Sydney to avoid New Caledonia earlier this week. Instead, it had an extended stay in Vanuatu.

It said it will update guests with any changes to future itineraries, including its 12-day Fiji Adventure, departing from Sydney on 26 May, which includes a call at New Caledonia.

Carnival Cruise Lines has revised a Carnival Splendor nine-day South Pacific cruise, which was due to three ports in New Caledonia this week. Instead it has added stops at Santo and Vila in Vanuatu.
