Two powerful earthquakes have damaged buildings, roads and power lines in Cuba, which is still struggling to recover from two hurricanes in recent weeks.
Both tremors, the second of which was the strongest, were felt in several cities in the east of the country, including Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo, and as far away as Florida and in Ocho Rios in Jamaica.
The Foreign Office said the second, most-powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, was followed by a series of aftershocks. The capital Havana was not affected, it said.
The earthquakes on Sunday triggered landslides and damage to some buildings, power lines and transformers, mostly in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Granma. Many areas have been left without electricity, according to local reports.
Cuba was already suffering from repeated power outages due to a combination of poor infrastructure and a lack of fuel, as well as two hurricanes, the most recent of which struck western Cuba last week.
Efforts are ongoing to restore power, but local reports say it could take several more days following the earthquakes.
